About the Role
The School of Physics and Chemical Sciences maintains a tradition of outstanding research in ground-breaking fields. The successful candidate will work in the Department of Physics and Astronomy within the Particle Physics Research Centre (PPRC).
This role will work on silicon detector development and construction for projects including the ATLAS Inner Tracker. The Inner Tracker (ITk) is a large silicon detector under design, to be constructed as a replacement of the Inner Detector system for the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) due to commence operation in the middle of the decade. The main goal of this post is to contribute to the construction of the ITk so that the upgraded ATLAS experiment at the HL-LHC can continue to search for signs of new physics and perform precision measurements of particles, including the Higgs boson. The post holder will also work on our other silicon detector R&D projects including detectors for future colliders at e+e- machines such as Belle 2 and FCC-ee. The post will be located at QMUL’s Mile End Campus in London but will require travel to CERN in Switzerland and universities and laboratories in EuropeAbout YouThe successful candidate will have a degree in a relevant STEM field. They will have demonstrable experience in planning and conducting experiments and working with or constructing radiation detectors. The successful candidate will also be able to demonstrate a good knowledge of either C++, Python.
Potential and/or ability to communicate science to non-specialist audiences and potential students in outreach work is expected. A willingness to engage with continuing professional development opportunities during the duration of the post is required.
